DEEL and BrightSpark to Provide Child Care Staff Retention Payments in Early 2025

The Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) and BrightSpark Early Learning Services are excited to announce that Child Care Worker Retention Payments will be available in early 2025. This initiative and one-time payment aims to support and retain the essential workforce that provides high-quality early learning experiences for Seattle’s children.

Workers in the early learning sector, which in Seattle is predominately comprised of women of color, continue to earn among the lowest wages in the state, approximately ten dollars less hourly than median workers, according to May 2022 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The City’s payments are intended to recognize the important role of child care workers and incentivize worker retention. Since the launch of the Child Care Worker Retention Payment program, thousands of child care workers have accessed this financial support. In 2023 alone, over 3,700 Seattle child care staff received up to $1,380, helping to stabilize the workforce.

The 2025 retention payments will build on this success, offering financial boosts to child care workers who have remained dedicated to their roles despite the ongoing pressures in the industry. These payments are designed to reward commitment in a sector where turnover can be high, and the need for experienced, passionate educators is critical.

Child care professionals can expect to receive their retention payments in spring 2025. Funding for the Seattle Child Care Staff Retention Payments is allocated from the City’s Payroll Expense Tax—as part of the 2024 budget– and DEEL remains committed to advocating for long-term solutions that support better compensation in the field. By partnering with organizations like BrightSpark, DEEL continues to invest in the workforce that shapes the future of Seattle’s children.
